Under pressure, Mexican-owned Cemex says it won’t help build Trump’s border wall

By Tiara Wilkerson

Summary: Cemex, one of the world’s largest resource suppliers, refuses to participate in the building of the wall. This Mexico-Based company has a lot of reason to boycott the creation of the wall. According to Kate Linthicum, “Back home, where many view Trump’s wall as an anti-Mexican symbol, some have said participating in its construction would be equivalent to an act of treason.” American contractor are looking to Cemex because it’s location on either side of he border makes them a possible contender. Mexico’s opinions of Trump’s motives have stopped the company from registering for the position. However, one Mexican company, Ecovelocity, has agreed to be a supplier for the wall.

Opinion: I think that the company Cemex has a valid reason to deny the job as the lead supplier. I believe Trump’s motives behind the wall are immoral. He falsely accuses many immigrants. He generalizes the whole immigrant population as having criminalistic tendencies.  We can see from a tweet from Donald Trump how actions from a small group influences views on all immigrants, “Everyone is now saying how right I was with illegal immigration & the wall. After Paris, they’re all on the bandwagon.” He claims that the actions of a group of immigrants in Paris means that all immigrants have bad intentions.

Hawaiian Judge Refuses to Change Ruling Ruling Against Travel Ban

Hawaii judge rejects Trump administration request to revise ruling against travel ban

By Layla Schweng

Summary: Derrick Watson a judge from Honolulu, refused to limit his ruling to a six-country ban. Federal lawyers have been asking Watson to change his ruling not to apply to other bans that Trump had ordered. But Watson said, “The motion, in other words, asks the court to make a distinction that the federal defendants’ previous briefs and arguments never did. As important, there is nothing unclear about the scope of the court’s order…. The federal defendants’ motion is denied”. He has made a statement that the order was unconstitutional and therefor can not be issued.

Opinion: I think that Trumps ban is very unconstitutional because it is discrimination against the first amendment. Trump is discriminating against Muslims and people from those countries. In the first amendment it states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”. This shows that the travel ban law is breaking this part of the amendment.

Because faster deportation rates are *exactly* what we need right now

original article: [x]

Summary: Judges all over the US are being moved all around and transferred to cities that ICE believes has a high population of undocumented immigrants. This includes places like New York, Phoenix, New Orleans, Los Angeles, and even our local San Francisco. That’s not the full list, however, many cities across the nation are being targeted.

Everybody knows that Trump has made a lot of promises about immigrants. He promised to build a wall, and get rid of illegal immigrants. This is one of the things he’s doing to try to implement this promise.

There are many people against this and who are rising up, including some of the immigration judges. Paul Schmidt, a former immigration judge and chairman of the board of immigration appeals, stood against him.

Opinion: I think this is an atrocious thing. Even if these people have committed small crimes, they should be allowed to come.

Woman Detained After Speaking About Deportation Fears Is Released

By: Lucas Binder

Article link

Summary

The article follows the story of Daniela Vargas, a woman who was detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Officers after speaking out about deportation, and specifically the fear of it. She was pulled over by officers driving home from a town hall meeting where she spoke on the subject. She had immigrated from Argentina when she was 7 years old and was free to be in America under the DACA or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. She had two pending DACA renewals in when she was arrested.

Opinion

In my opinion, she should not be deported or threatened, especially after speaking out publicly on the subject. The fact that ICE officers are willing to specifically go after a person for speaking out about deportation is wrong and uncalled for. The fact that the country has reached this point of xenophobia where it is willing to censor people for deportation is saddening to me.

Educators Prepare for Immigration Agents at the Schoolhouse

16bazelonweb-master675Wonders:

This article makes me wonder why we have such harsh laws around immigrants. It’s obvious now since our new president, but even before that, why would we have these laws? This also brings up the question of what would happen if an illegal immigrant was caught. Would they be sent back? Imprisoned? Injured? Why would it get this far?

Opinions:

I think that we should seriously loosen our laws about immigration. Sending innocent people back to savage countries, or in some cases to their own death, just doesn’t seem right. There does of course need to be some enforcement around who gets in, but it doesn’t need to be so harsh. Donald Trump, has an idea that certain minorities are more likely to be terrorists than others, and is using that as an excuse to kick them out of the country. But it is really the same as kicking any other innocent person to their death.

Immigrants Hide, Fearing Capture on ‘Any Corner’

By: Lucas Binder

Summary

Click me to go to the article

This article is about immigrants living in a time where deportation is a serious problem. With Donald Trump promising to ‘build a wall’ and ‘deport all illegal immigrants’ many undocumented immigrants are worried to leave their homes in fear of deportation. The New York Times interviewed many undocumented immigrants that were in the country. All of them were worried about being in public areas because of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Officers looking for possible ‘criminals’. Some people have even been getting their children passports and finding guardians so if they are deported, they have a parent, and can visit them in Mexico. It has even gone to the extreme where one parent with an autistic child has refused to go to the doctor because of her fear of deportation.

Opinion

This fear off immigration is deeply connected to President Trump’s promises to get rid of undocumented immigrants in the country. I disagree completely with is efforts to get rid of immigrants. In my opinion trump is a complete racist and xenophobe who has gotten in power. I think that these immigrants should be able to walk outside to do what they need to do without having to worry about deportation. The situations that this has been putting immigrants in is wrong, and should be stopped as soon a possible.

Shaking up the Dinosaur Family Tree

By Sofia Staley

link

Summary

Since 1888, dinosaurs have been classified by their hip shape but recently Matthew G. Barron has proposed a new way to sort them. Currently, dinosaurs are divided into two groups of hip structure, the bird hipped (Ornithischia) and the lizard hipped (Saurischia). This classification was declared by Harry Steely, a Victorian paleontologist, and everyone just kind of went with it. However, Matthew Barron of the University of Cambridge published a new family tree last Wednesday. It has 4 categories and is the product of 3 years of data collection. Barron has traveled to museums all over the world and assessed important dinosaur fossils. He then put all of his noticeable characteristics of dinosaurs into a computer program called TNT. The program them went through 32 billion trees to find the right one to classify all of the dinosaurs. Although Barron’s tree might not be accepted immediately, experts are willing to give it a chance due to the amount of data that it contains.

Wonders

I wonder when Barron’s tree will be widely accepted, or if it even will be. The article states that Matthew started the project as a way to obtain his PhD, so I wonder if he has gotten it yet. I also want to know some of the museums he visited because I am intrigued.

How Translators Are Helping To Resist Trump’s Immigration Policies

Sabrina Nguyen.

Summary:

Translation Outreach Network was inspired by the case of Henry Rousso, a French scholar who was detained while attending a conference in Texas. In response to this case U.S translators have began to make stories of immigrants and there encounters with U.S immigration widely available. Volunteer translators offer free services to people traveling or have a difficulty speaking English and will tell a short narrative to help them when encountering immigration. Between to 70 volunteers there are currently 25 different languages that are spoken. The network is composed of professional translators and bilingual scholars as well as journalists living not only in the U.S but around the world.

Wonders: How many immigrants have benefited from this program? What are the current translated languages offered? How many employees in the company work abroad?

By Samantha Ross

Summary: This article, “’I’m terrified to leave the country’: Techies weigh in on Trump’s immigration policies” written by Sara Ashley O’Brien, describes how new immigration policies regarding Mexico and seven majority Muslim countries are affecting and connecting to many Silicon Valley workers. Some “techies” are even participating in a project called “Banned,” which showcases their personal stories, to try and cope with the fear that Trump’s policies are spreading. The project’s goal is to inspire people to be curious about other immigrants in their community who are trying to get their work done, and live as normally as they can, whilst they’re dealing with this “existential threat.” To do so, the project is sharing the lives of six Silicon Valley workers have been “shaken up by the Trump administration’s immigration policies.” I believe that O’Brien wrote this article to show how people, even in the booming technology industry, are impacted by Trump’s actions.

Wonders: The article states, “He ordered the construction of a U.S.-Mexico wall. And he’s considering an executive order to reevaluate and revamp various work visas,” however, the author never mentions any particular stories about immigrants fearing this policy. The article is mainly centered around immigrants from the seven majority Muslim countries. I wonder what stories are featured in “Banned” regarding Mexico. I could find my answer by doing more research on the project.

Protesting the Travel Ban Results in Arrests

Image result for travel ban protest

By: Mia Elliott 8C

Summary: In the New York Times article “About 20 Rabbis Arrested During Protest Over Trump Travel Ban” by Colin Moynihan it explains how 20 rabbis were arrested during a protests one of Trump’s new executive order that bans many largely Muslim countries from entering the country. There was about 200 people at the protest that was lead by many rabbis. The article states, “Rabbi Jill Jacobs, the executive director of T’ruah, a rabbinical group that organized the protest, said it was meant to show that many Jews opposed the ban.” The protesters sat in the street and stopped cars. Eventually the police were called many were escorted off the road and arrested. The author wrote this article to inform readers on what many people are doing to protest Trump’s travel ban.

Opinion: I think this was a good article, I wish there had been more detail about the protests but it was good overall. I think the information presented in the article is relevant and important to or society. I think everyone should be educated in what is going on in our country and what we can do to help. I enjoyed reading the article, but I wish the author had put a little more detail into it.

Woman Detained for Talking About Fear of Immigration is Released

By Sam Macleay

Woman Detained After Speaking About Deportation Fears Is Released

Summary : Daniela Vargas, an illegal immigrant from Argentina, was released from a holding cell after being detained. She was detained after speaking about her deportation fears in public. She was to be deported without trial, but many groups of people disliked this. These groups created a petition to let her be free and live in the U.S, also showing how the I.C.E. had violated her First Amendment rights. Thus she was released under supervision. She is expected to return to her normal everyday life, as said in a statement from Elmore and Peterson law firm. The groups involved in her petition of release stated, “But, we will continue to challenge the unconstitutional actions of I.C.E. agents in this case and will not rest until she is no longer under threat of deportation.” According to Vargas, she loves this country and wants to do many things to help it. She states she would do anything for this country, even going so far as to try and join the military. She was apparently denied this right because she is an illegal immigrant.

Opinion : This article highlights the illegal immigration experience clearly. It shows how someone who immigrated here as a young child, and who grew up here, still can’t call this place home. They have to be always in fear and can’t live a normal life. They are treated unfairly, and can’t do things because they are not here legally. Especially now, with the crackdown on immigration, many people have to live in constant fear of losing everything.

ICE agents make arrests at courthouses, sparking backlash from prosecutors and attorneys

ELA Blog

By: William Roesler

Summary: The new president Donald Trump has ordered ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) to go through Latina majority neighborhoods and cities and detain illegal immigrants so they can be deported. ICE has spent time  raiding many different public locations such as a Costco. But now they have started raiding courthouses. This is really bad because illegal immigrants who might try to seek a restraining order or help with an abusive relationship won’t go to courthouses because they fear of being deported.

Opinion: This just adds to the horrible things that are being caused by the Trump administration. Since he has became president he has tried to deport millions by enacting new laws and policies such as this one to get rid of so called rapist and killers. Because of his policies people are afraid to go to court to report domestic abuse or other real crimes. But instead they stay home in a horrible environment.
